Frequently Asked Questions
As you will discover on the government website about MOTs, you can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. For example, if your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date for next year is 16 April. Note that if you have had an MOT provided by us in the previous year, we always contact you with plenty of time so that you can book without fear of your MOT expiring.
Generally, MOTs take approximately an hour to complete. You are welcome to wait in our waiting area if you wish. This is helpful if you need to use your vehicle immediately after the MOT has been completed. Also, if your car does not pass its MOT, being with us can sometimes help get things remedied faster.
If your car failed its MOT, you can leave it with us and we can carry out the essential repairs needed. We'll provide you with a quotation for the work before we start. As long as repairs are performed within 10 working days of failing the MOT then your vehicle can be partially retested at no charge.
As long as your existing MOT certificate is still valid and your vehicle is roadworthy, you can drive your vehicle away to have it repaired elsewhere if you so wish. Note that this is only possible if the failure(s) revealed by the MOT and not classified as dangerous.
Dangerous defects will have to be repaired at our workshops because your vehicle should not be driven with such defects at any time including from or away from the MOT test centre.
If you choose to drive your vehicle away from our centre with a dangerous defect, you need to be aware that you do so at your own risk and we cannot be help liable for any consequences of you doing so.
There are three types of MOT defect. Dangerous, Major, Minor.
Dangerous defects are issues which will make your vehicle is unroadworthy. These defects cover all aspects of your vehicle and your MOT certificate will indicate where these defects have been found. If a dangerous defect is identified, your vehicle will fail its MOT and you will NOT be able to drive your vehicle away from the test centre until the defects in question have been remedied.
Major defects will be a cause for your MOT to fail and should be remedied immediately. Major defects do not mean that your vehicle is unroadworthy so, as long as your certificate is still valid and as long as no dangerous defects were identified, if you wish to you may drive your vehicle away and have it repaired elsewhere.
Minor defects will not result in a failure of your MOT but nevertheless they should be addressed as soon as possible so that they do not become more serious.
